MAGICKA DRAGONKNIGHT DPS PVE BUILD

Writer: xGamx
Designer: xGamx
Role: DPS – Support DPS (optional)
Patch: Waking Flame

Build Introduction:
Welcome to the Magicka Dragonknight build Flamebinder for The Elder Scrolls Online! Magicka Dragonknight is an easy-to-learn Class that will help manage your skill uptimes. They focus heavily on Flame Damage, excel in melee range, and have amazing Crowd Control (CC) capability, even as a Magicka Damage Dealer (DPS). They are also the only source of group-wide Minor Brutality, making them even more valuable in groups with Stamina based DPS. Magicka Dragonknights are always sought after in Trial content, as they can fulfill a “Support DPS” role. The Flamebinder build will cover all of this and more, including recommended armor sets, skills, and many alternatives to meet a variety of needs. Be sure to read the guide in its entirety and bookmark the page, as the build will be updated with each new patch.

Below you will find plenty of information to begin fulfilling the DPS role as a Magicka Dragonknight. You will learn to successfully utilize the benefits that you can grant yourself and your group members through the unique set of skills and passives provided by a Magicka Dragonknight. Being a DPS in ESO is very different from other MMORPGs. The combat is fast-paced as there are no set cooldowns on your skills. This means you must learn a rotation. This will include a main damage skill (spammable), Light Attacks, Damage over Time (DoT) skills, Area of Effect (AoE) skills, and buffs.

Race

Khajiit

Increases your Health Recovery by 100 and your Stamina and Magicka Recovery by 85.

Increase your Maximum Health, Magicka, and Stamina by 915.

Increases your Critical Damage and Critical Healing by 12%. Decreases your detection radius in Stealth by 3 meters.

High Elf

When you activate an ability, you restore 625 Magicka or Stamina, based on whichever is lowest. This effect can occur once every 6 seconds. When you are using an ability with a channel or cast time, you take 5% less damage.

Increases Max Magicka by 2000.

Increases your Spell Damage by 258.

Dark Elf

Increase Max Magicka and Max Stamina by 1910.

Increases your Flame Resistance by 4620.

Increases your Weapon and Spell Damage by 258.

Khajiit are highly recommended for Magicka Dragonknights. The increased Critical Damage is what makes the Khajiit one of the most optimal options for all Magicka DPS, let alone Magicka Dragonknights. Additionally, you will gain increased Maximum Health, Magicka, and Stamina as well as recovery stats for all three resource pools. This allows you to be more agile during combat, increasing survivability. Compared to High Elf, you may find sustaining easier on a Khajiit due to the Magicka Recovery passive being further increased by buffs like Minor and Major Intellect.

High Elves are highly recommended for Magicka Dragonknights. They benefit from high stat increases to Maximum Magicka and Spell Damage, two very important stats for Magicka-based DPS in ESO. The method of sustain provided by High Elves is unique, and Magicka Dragonknights can make use of it rather easily, as most of the abilities you have slotted are Class skills. Like most other Classes, a Magicka Dragonknight fails to utilize the damage reduction due to rarely casting abilities with channel or cast times.

Dark Elves are a well-rounded option for both Magicka and Stamina DPS. They provide increases to your Maximum Magicka and Maximum Stamina. If you choose to become a vampire and struggle to stay alive, the bonus to your Flame Resistances will allow you to stay alive more reliably.

Invest all available points into Magicka. Your Maximum Magicka will increase how much damage your skills do in combat. This can be seen on any skill tooltip in the game. If you require more Health, altering the enchantments on your armor or using a different food is much easier to change at any time. Damage Dealers are expected to have at least 18,500 Maximum Health with a food buff active for late-game content.

Ghastly Eye Bowl

Ghastly Eye Bowl is a crafted food in ESO and can only be obtained otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This food increases your Maximum Magicka and Magicka Recovery. If you feel that you need more Health, try Clockwork Citrus Filet or Solitude Salmon Soup instead.

Clockwork Citrus Filet

Clockwork Citrus Filet is a crafted food in ESO and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This food increases your Maximum Health, Maximum Magicka, and Magicka Recovery. This food is expensive; if Gold is an issue, try Witchmother’s Potent Brew instead.

Solitude Salmon Soup

Solitude Salmon Soup is a crafted food in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. Only use this food if you require more Maximum Health and Maximum Magicka but you do not need the Magicka Recovery.

Essence of Spell Power

Essence of Spell Power potions are crafted potions in ESO and can only be obtained otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. These potions are highly recommended in all content, as they provide sustain and necessary buffs. If Gold is an issue, try using the generic Essence of Magicka.

Essence of Magicka

Essence of Magicka potions are generic potions found in ESO and they can drop from a variety of sources. You will often find plenty of these potions during a regular play session. Only use if you have no other options to sustain Magicka.

Your options for beginner gear are typically limited to Craftable Sets or something very cheap on Guild Stores. Spell Parasite, Law of Julianos, and Willpower all increase the core combat stats needed by a Magicka DPS. The configuration laid out above is not required, however, it will provide the most optimal path of progression. Be aware that Willpower jewelry can drop in Healthy, Robust, and Arcane. So be sure that you purchase and equip the correct trait. Once you have obtained this setup, you should be ready to start hunting for a Monster Set to replace your helmet and shoulder pieces. Grothdarr is a solid option that is rather easy to obtain. It works very well in both add fights and boss encounters.

Front Bar

Molten Whip is your spam ability that should only be used when all DoTs are active. Each time Burning Embers and Engulfing Flames are activated, Molten Whip deals an additional 66% more damage on the next cast.

Burning Embers always applies the burning status effect on hit. It also provides a burst of healing when the skill ends or is reapplied. If you need Health back in a pinch, use this skill on an enemy that you already have it applied to. Spending skill points in the Combustion passive from the Ardent Flame skill line will restore 500 Magicka every time you apply the burning status effect to an enemy.

Inner Light is primarily slotted for the 5% increase to your Maximum Magicka, but it also grants Major Prophecy if you are not using Essence of Spell Power potions. Spending skill points in the Magicka Controller passive from the Mages Guild skill line grants an additional 2% Maximum Magicka and Magicka Recovery for each Mages Guild skill slotted.

Burning Talons immobilizes enemies in an area and provides a synergy that a group member can activate to deal a considerable amount of damage. Burning Talons is usually only slotted if you are using Elf Bane, as it has a high cost and a short duration. If you are having issues with sustain, try Scalding Rune instead.

Engulfing Flames increases the amount of Flame Damage taken by enemies hit by up to 10% for the duration. This skill is very important to keep active at all times in a group setting, as it increases DPS for everyone.

Ultimate: Flawless Dawnbreaker is slotted for passive bonuses. Spending skill points in the Slayer and Banish the Wicked passives from the Fighters Guild skill line increases Weapon Damage and Spell Damage by 3% and generates 3 Ultimate whenever you kill an enemy while Flawless Dawnbreaker is slotted.

Back Bar

Spell Symmetry is your primary source of Magicka sustain. Casting it also decreases the cost of your next Magicka ability by 33%, allowing you to cut the cost of Burning Talons or Eruption significantly. Relying entirely on Spell Symmetry for Magicka sustain has some drawbacks. Each time you cast it, your damage shield strength and healing done is reduced for 4 seconds.

Unstable Wall of Elements is the most important DoT skill to keep active in combat. While the skill is active, the enchantment on your back bar will continue to trigger, even while on your front bar. If a Maelstrom Arena Destruction Staff is equipped, this skill is required to deal the bonus damage.

Channeled Acceleration is a very important skill to keep active throughout the entire fight as it provides the Minor Force buff. While the buff lasts for 36 seconds when at max rank, be sure to activate the skill when there are about 2 seconds left as there is a channel time needed to refresh the duration of the buff.

Flames of Oblivion has a low cost and deals good single target damage. If you are not using Essence of Spell Power potions regularly, you can slot it on the front bar instead, as having this skill slotted will grant Major Prophecy.

Eruption has a long duration and decreases Movement Speed to all enemies standing inside. This skill works very well against add fights and bosses that do not move much, however, if the boss moves around frequently, you may get better results using a different skill.

Ultimate: Standard of Might is your primary Ultimate. It is very effective in single target fights, increasing damage dealt, reducing damage taken, and providing resources upon use. It also provides a synergy to a group member to activate that deals a considerable amount of damage and immobilizes enemies in the area.

Alternative Skills

Flame Lash
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Flame Lash is a great alternative to Molten Whip. When used against Immobilized or Off Balance targets, the skill changes to Power Lash. Power Lash deals increased damage, costs less, and heals you.

Shooting Star
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Shooting Star can be slotted in place of Flawless Dawnbreaker if you want a slight increase to your Maximum Magicka and Magicka Recovery while on the front bar. This Ultimate performs best in large groups of enemies, as casting it refunds a lot of resources and Ultimate upon impact.

Scalding Rune
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Scalding Rune is a great alternative to Burning Talons if you are not using Elf Bane as it lasts much longer, increasing your Magicka sustain. Slotting Scalding Rune on the front bar will provide extra Maximum Magicka and Magicka Recovery as well.

Crushing Shock
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Crushing Shock is a great alternative to Force Pulse and Molten Whip if you would like to provide more utility to your group with a ranged interrupt.

Elemental Rage
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Elemental Rage can be slotted in place of Standard of Might when you require a high burst of AoE damage. This Ultimate should only be used in this case specifically, as Standard of Might increases your damage significantly while it is active.

Force Pulse
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Force Pulse is a great alternative to Molten Whip if you would prefer to have more AoE damage.

Dampen Magic
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Dampen Magic is a damage shield that gets stronger for each piece of light armor that you equip. The shield is capped at 60% so you will be able to reach that rather easily. Replace Spell Symmetry on the back bar if you need more survival. This means you will need to Heavy Attack to get Magicka back.

Barbed Trap
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Barbed Trap is a great alternative to Channeled Acceleration, however, it can only be used while in close range. It does not deal much damage but it also provides the Minor Force buff. While the buff lasts for 18 seconds when at max rank, be sure to reset the trap when there are about 2 seconds left as there is a short time needed to arm the trap once it is placed.

Rotation

Below you will find how to begin a Dynamic rotation. This means you activate your skills accordingly, depending on the situation and duration of your skills. It yields the best possible DPS and resource management but is harder to master. Expect to see a Static rotation at some point in the future.
LA = Light Attack

Pre-buff with Flames of Oblivion and Channeled Acceleration.

Begin combat on the back bar:
LA > Eruption > LA > Unstable Wall of Fire > Bar Swap >
LA > Engulfing Flames > LA > Burning Embers > LA > Burning Talons > LA > Molten Whip until DoTs need to be applied to the target again.

Notes

If parsing, ensure your Standard of Might is ready to cast before initiating combat. Activate it only after all of your DoTs are active on both bars.

You can cast Spell Symmetry once or twice when running low on Magicka.
