MAGICKA SORCERER DPS PVE BUILD

Writer: xGamx
Designer: xGamx
Role: DPS
Patch: Waking Flame

Build Introduction:
Welcome to the Magicka Sorcerer build Dark Tempest for The Elder Scrolls Online! Magicka Sorcerers are extremely versatile, having many different play styles while also being one of the most simple Classes to learn for beginners, however, this does not mean they are any less viable in end game content. Sorcerers have amazing Health and Magicka sustain as well as the capability to gain higher than average Weapon Damage and Spell Damage due to their unique set of skills and passives. They are also the only available source of group-wide Minor Prophecy, making them even more valuable to groups with Magicka-based Damage Dealers (DPS). The Dark Tempest build will cover all of this and more, including recommended armor sets, skills, and many alternatives to meet a variety of needs. Be sure to read the guide in its entirety and bookmark the page as the build will be updated with each new patch.

Below you will find plenty of information to begin fulfilling the DPS role as a Magicka Sorcerer. You will learn to successfully utilize the benefits that you can grant yourself and your group members through the unique set of skills and passives provided by a Magicka Sorcerer. Being a DPS in ESO is very different from other MMORPGs. The combat is fast-paced as there are no set cooldowns on your skills. This means you must learn a rotation. This will include a main damage skill (spammable), Light Attacks, Damage over Time (DoT) skills, Area of Effect (AoE) skills, and buffs.

Race

Khajiit

Increases your Health Recovery by 100 and your Stamina and Magicka Recovery by 85.

Increase your Maximum Health, Magicka, and Stamina by 915.

Increases your Critical Damage and Critical Healing by 12%. Decreases your detection radius in Stealth by 3 meters.

High Elf

When you activate an ability, you restore 625 Magicka or Stamina, based on whichever is lowest. This effect can occur once every 6 seconds. When you are using an ability with a channel or cast time, you take 5% less damage.

Increases Max Magicka by 2000.

Increases your Spell Damage by 258.

Dark Elf

Increase Max Magicka and Max Stamina by 1910.

Increases your Flame Resistance by 4620.

Increases your Weapon and Spell Damage by 258.

Khajiit are highly recommended for Magicka Sorcerers. The increased Critical Damage is what makes the Khajiit the one of the most optimal options for all Magicka DPS, let alone Magicka Sorcerers. As an added bonus, you will also gain increased Maximum Health, Magicka, and Stamina as well as recovery stats for all three resource pools. This allows you to be more agile during combat, increasing survivability. Compared to High Elf, you may find sustaining easier on a Khajiit due to the Magicka Recovery passive being further increased by buffs like Minor and Major Intellect.

High Elves are highly recommended for Magicka Sorcerers. The method of sustain provided by High Elves is unique, and Magicka Sorcerers can make use of it rather easily, as most of the abilities you have slotted are Class skills. Like most other Classes, a Magicka Sorcerer fails to utilize the damage reduction due to rarely casting abilities with channel or cast times.

Dark Elves are a well rounded option for both Magicka and Stamina DPS. They offer great increases to your Maximum Magicka and Maximum Stamina. If you choose to become a vampire and struggle to stay alive, the huge bonus to your Flame Resistances will allow you to stay alive more reliably.

Invest all available points into Magicka. Your Maximum Magicka will increase how much damage your skills do in combat. This can be seen on any skill tooltip in the game. If you require more Health, altering the enchantments on your armor or using a different food is much easier to change at any time. Damage Dealers are expected to have at least 18,500 Maximum Health with a food buff active for late-game content.

Consumables

Ghastly Eye Bowl

Ghastly Eye Bowl is a crafted food in ESO and can only be obtained otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This food increases your Maximum Magicka and Magicka Recovery. If you feel that you need more Health, try Clockwork Citrus Filet or Solitude Salmon Soup instead.

Clockwork Citrus Filet

Clockwork Citrus Filet is a crafted food in ESO and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This food increases your Maximum Health, Maximum Magicka, and Magicka Recovery. This food is expensive; if Gold is an issue, try Witchmother’s Potent Brew instead.

Solitude Salmon Soup

Solitude Salmon Soup is a crafted food in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. Only use this food if you require more Maximum Health and Maximum Magicka but you do not need the Magicka Recovery.

Essence of Spell Power

Essence of Spell Power potions are crafted potions in ESO and can only be obtained otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. These potions are highly recommended in all content, as they provide sustain and necessary buffs. If Gold is an issue, try using the generic Essence of Magicka.

Essence of Magicka

Essence of Magicka potions are generic potions found in ESO and they can drop from a variety of sources. You will often find plenty of these potions during a regular play session. Only use if you have no other options to sustain Magicka. If you are using these potions, be sure to slot Critical Surge.

Your options for beginner gear are typically limited to Craftable Sets or something very cheap on Guild Stores. Spell Parasite, Law of Julianos, and Willpower all increase the core combat stats needed by a Magicka DPS. The configuration laid out above is not required, however, it will provide the most optimal path of progression. Be aware that Willpower jewelry can drop in Healthy, Robust, and Arcane. So be sure that you purchase and equip the correct trait. Once you have obtained this setup, you should be ready to start hunting for a Monster Set to replace your helmet and shoulder pieces. Grothdarr is a solid option that is rather easy to obtain. It works very well in both add fights and boss encounters.

Skills

Several Sorcerer passives found in the Sorcerer Class skill lines provide amazing bonuses. For example, spending skill points in the Exploitation passive from the Dark Magic skill line will provide Minor Prophecy to all group members for up to 20 seconds when you cast any skill from that skill line. Spending skill points in the Expert Summoner passive from the Daedric Summoning skill line will grant up to an additional 8% Max Health while you have a pet from that skill line active. And last but certainly not least, spending skill points in the Expert Mage passive from the Storm Calling skill line will increase your Weapon Damage and Spell Damage by 2% for each Class skill slotted. These are only some of the notable passives available to Sorcerers exclusively, there are even more.

Front Bar

Force Pulse is your spam ability that should only be used when all DoT skills are active. It deals great single target damage but also deals AoE damage to enemies with a magic status effect applied to them.

Daedric Prey increases damage dealt by your summoned pets significantly, including your Greater Storm Atronach. Only reactivate this skill after the duration runs out, otherwise, the timer will reset and will not deal any damage.

Twilight Tormenter deals great damage on its own, however, activating the special ability causes it to deal much more damage to enemies above 50% Health. Once your enemy is below 50% Health, stop activating the special ability. Must be slotted on both bars to remain active at all times.

Crystal Fragments should only be cast when the special effect triggers. Once triggered, this skill takes immediate priority as it can trigger every time you cast a skill that costs Magicka. Spending skill points in the Blood Magic and Exploitation passives from the Dark Magic skill line will cause damage dealt by this skill to heal you and provide the group with Minor Sorcery for 20 seconds.

Volatile Familiar deals great damage on its own, however, activating the special ability causes it to become one of the strongest AoE skills in the game that also stuns on the final pulse. Must be slotted on both bars to remain active at all times.

Ultimate: Greater Storm Atronach stuns enemies on impact, has a long duration, and grants a group member a powerful synergy. This synergy is the only way to grant Major Berserk to a group member and is best used by a DPS.

Back Bar

Channeled Acceleration is a very important skill to keep active throughout the entire fight as it provides the Minor Force buff. While the buff lasts for 36 seconds when at max rank, be sure to activate the skill when there are about 2 seconds left as there is a channel time needed to refresh the duration of the buff.

Unstable Wall of Elements is the most important DoT skill to keep active in combat. While the skill is active, the enchantment on your back bar will continue to trigger, even while on your front bar. If a Maelstrom Arena Destruction Staff is equipped, this skill is required to deal the bonus damage.

Twilight Tormenter deals great damage on its own, however, activating the special ability causes it to deal much more damage to enemies above 50% Health. Once your enemy is below 50% Health, stop activating the special ability. Must be slotted on both bars to remain active at all times.

Lightning Flood pairs well with Unstable Wall of Elements as the durations of both skills are the same. It also provides a synergy to a group member standing near it that deals a considerable amount of damage.

Alternative Skills

Bound Aegis
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Bound Aegis would be primarily slotted for the 8% increase to your Maximum Magicka, but it also grants Minor Resolve. When activated, your block mitigation is increased by 40%. Can replace Volatile Familiar on both bars if you only want one pet.

Critical Surge
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Critical Surge provides Major Sorcery and is one of the best skills to help with Health sustain. If you are having trouble staying alive, replace Volatile Familiar on the back bar with Critical Surge and Volatile Familiar on the front bar with Bound Aegis.

Inner Light
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Inner Light grants Major Prophecy but would be primarily slotted for the 5% increase to Maximum Magicka. Spending skill points in the Magicka Controller passive from the Mages Guild skill line will grant an additional 2% Maximum Magicka.

Elemental Weapon
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Elemental Weapon is the strongest spammable skill available to Magicka DPS. It relies on Light Attack weaving, so it is not for beginners. Spending skill points in the Spell Orb passive from the Psijic Order skill line will increase your DPS even further.

Elemental Rage
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Elemental Rage can be slotted in place of Greater Storm Atronach when you require a high burst of AoE damage. It is best to slot on the back bar so you still receive the Spell Damage increase on the front bar.

Crushing Shock
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Crushing Shock is a great alternative to Force Pulse and Elemental Weapon if you would like to provide more utility to your group with a ranged interrupt.

Hardened Ward
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Hardened Ward grants both you and your active pets a very strong damage shield while active. The damage shield you cast on yourself is 10% stronger. Some content requires a damage shield to stay alive during certain mechanics. Replace Volatile Familiar on the back bar with Hardened Ward and Volatile Familiar on the front bar with Bound Aegis.

Scalding Rune
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Scalding Rune is a great alternative if you would prefer to only slot one pet. Replace Volatile Familiar on the back bar with Scalding Rune and Volatile Familiar on the front bar with Bound Aegis. You could also slot Scalding Rune on the front bar to increase your Maximum Magicka and Magicka Recovery.

Barbed Trap
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Barbed Trap is a great alternative to Channeled Acceleration, however, it can only be used while in close range. It does not deal much damage but it also provides the Minor Force buff. While the buff lasts for 18 seconds when at max rank, be sure to reset the trap when there are about 2 seconds left as there is a short time needed to arm the trap once it is placed.

Rotation

Below you will find how to begin a Dynamic rotation. This means you activate your skills accordingly, depending on the situation and duration of your skills. It yields the best possible DPS and resource management but is harder to master. Expect to see a Static rotation at some point in the future.
LA = Light Attack

Pre-buff with Channeled Acceleration, Twilight Tormentor, and Volatile Familiar.

Begin combat on the Front Bar:
LA > Daedric Prey > Bar Swap >
LA > Lightning Flood > LA > Unstable Wall of Fire > Bar Swap >
LAForce Pulse until the Crystal Fragments special effect activates or DoTs need to be applied to the target again.

Notes

Crystal Fragments should always be the top priority when the special effect activates. Never channel this ability.

Activate Volatile Familiar and Twilight Tormentor on the front bar only. This reduces the time spent on your back bar as well as the cost if you are using (Perfected) False God’s Devotion.

Be considerate of your group, be sure to summon your Greater Storm Atronach slightly away from the group. This allows you and your group to have a full view of the battlefield. The atronach is huge and could block the vision of the Tank or cause other DPS to have trouble Light Attacking.

If parsing, ensure that your Greater Storm Atronach or Elemental Rage is ready and cast it before Unstable Wall of Elements when beginning.
