Magicka Sorcerer

Writer: xGamx
Designer: xGamx
Role: DPS
Patch: Flames of Ambition

Build Introduction:
Welcome to the Magicka Sorcerer build Dark Tempest for The Elder Scrolls Online! Magicka Sorcerers are extremely versatile, having many different play styles while also being one of the most simple Classes to learn for beginners, however, this does not mean they are any less viable in end game content. Sorcerers have amazing Health and Magicka sustain as well as the capability to gain higher than average Weapon Damage and Spell Damage due to their unique set of skills and passives. They are also the only available source of group wide Minor Prophecy, making them even more valuable to groups with Magicka based Damage Dealers (DPS). The Dark Tempest build will cover all of this and more, including recommended armor sets, skills, and many alternatives to meet a variety of needs. Be sure to read the guide in its entirety and bookmark the page as the build will be updated with each new patch.

Below you will find plenty of information to begin fulfilling the DPS role as a Magicka Sorcerer. You will learn to successfully utilize the benefits that they can provide to both themselves and to their group through their unique set of skill and passives. Being a DPS in ESO is very different from other MMORPGs. There are no set cooldowns on your skills, so you must learn a rotation. This will include a main damage skill (spammable), Light Attacks, Damage over Time skills, Area of Effect skills, and buffs. Luckily you can follow along at your own pace. The path to becoming a great Sorcerer DPS is long, and it starts here.

Race

Khajiit

Increases your Health Recovery by 100 and your Stamina and Magicka Recovery by 85.

Increase your Maximum Health, Magicka, and Stamina by 915.

Increases your Critical Damage and Critical Healing by 12%. Decreases your detection radius in Stealth by 3 meters.

High Elf

When you activate an ability, you restore 625 Magicka or Stamina, based on whichever is lowest. This effect can occur once every 6 seconds. When you are using an ability with a channel or cast time, you take 5% less damage.

Increases Max Magicka by 2000.

Increases your Spell Damage by 258.

Dark Elf

Increase Max Magicka and Max Stamina by 1910.

Increases your Flame Resistance by 4620.

Increases your Weapon and Spell Damage by 258.

Khajiit are highly recommended for Magicka Sorcerers. The increased Critical Damage is what makes the Khajiit the one of the most optimal options for all Magicka DPS, let alone Magicka Sorcerers. As an added bonus, you will also gain increased Maximum Health, Magicka, and Stamina as well as recovery stats for all three resource pools. This allows you to be more agile during combat, increasing survivability. Compared to High Elf, you may find sustaining easier on a Khajiit due to the Magicka Recovery passive being further increased by buffs like Minor and Major Intellect.

High Elves are highly recommended for Magicka Sorcerers. The method of sustain provided by High Elves is unique, and Magicka Sorcerers can make use of it rather easily, as most of the abilities you have slotted are Class skills. Like most other Classes, a Magicka Sorcerer fails to utilize the damage reduction due to rarely casting abilities with channel or cast times.

Dark Elves are a well rounded option for both Magicka and Stamina DPS. They offer great increases to your Maximum Magicka and Maximum Stamina. If you choose to become a vampire and struggle to stay alive, the huge bonus to your Flame Resistances will allow you to stay alive more reliably.

Invest all available points into Magicka. Your Maximum Magicka will increase how much damage your skills do in combat. This can be seen on any skill tooltip in the game. If you require more Health, altering the enchantments on your armor or using a different food is much easier to change on the fly. DPS are expected to have at least 20,000 Maximum Health with a food buff active for late game content.

Consumables

Clockwork Citrus Filet

Clockwork Citrus Filet is a crafted food in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. Use this food if you require more Maximum Health but still want the Maximum Magicka and Magicka Recovery. This food is expensive, if Gold is an issue, try Witchmother’s Potent Brew.

Ghastly Eye Bowl

Ghastly Eye Bowl is a crafted food in ESO, and can only be obtained otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. Use this food if you do not need extra Maximum Health and want to increase your Maximum Magicka and Magicka Recovery further. If you are having an issue with Health, try using Clockwork Citrus Filet or Artaeum Pickled Fish Bowl.

Artaeum Pickled Fish Bowl

Artaeum Pickled Fish Bowl is a crafted food in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. Only use this food if you require more Maximum Health and Maximum Magicka but you do not need the Magicka Recovery. This food is expensive, if Gold is an issue, try using Solitude Millet Salmon Soup.

Essence of Spell Power

Essence of Spell Power potions are crafted potions in ESO, and can only be obtained otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. These potions are highly recommended in all content, as they provide sustain and necessary buffs. If Gold is an issue, try using the generic Essence of Magicka instead.

Essence of Magicka

Essence of Magicka potions are generic potions found in ESO, and they can drop from a variety of sources. You will often come across plenty of these during a regular play session. Use these if you require a quick boost to your Magicka and do not have other options.  Using these potions without Critical Surge active will result in a DPS decrease.

Domihaus will summon a ring of fire as long as you are dealing some form of magical damage. The set itself will not always deal much damage as the ring is very thin, but the increase to your Spell Damage is what really matters. Domihaus also provides you with extra Stamina and Magicka, allowing you to possibly block or dodge roll one more time than you may without it.

Mother’s Sorrow provides more Spell Critical than Medusa at face value, but because Mother’s Sorrow is Light Armor, it increases your Spell Critical even further as well as your Spell Penetration. However, it does not grant you Minor Force, meaning you must slot Channeled Acceleration or Barbed Trap. Both sets are extremely effective, so it is your decision on which to use.

Unleashed Ritualist increases your combat pet damage significantly. Not only by a percentage, but combat pets deal even more damage due to the huge increase to your Max Magicka. This set can be broken without much downside, and it is rather easy to keep active. As long as you are dealing any form of damage at least once every 10 seconds on your Front Bar, you have nothing to worry about.

(Perfected) Crushing Wall significantly increases your Light Attack damage to enemies standing in your Unstable Wall of Elements, meaning your LA weaving will be even more rewarding. The effect works even while on your Front Bar, however, Unstable Wall of Elements must be active. You can easily do without the Perfected version of this set as it only adds Spell Penetration to the skills on your Back Bar. As a Magicka DPS, you can already reach these requirements with little effort.

Dungeon

Dungeons feature large groups of enemies that are typically tougher than others found in Overland content.
Each Dungeon has a Normal and Veteran mode and many bosses have unique mechanics that need to be managed by the whole group.

Maw of the Infernal summons a Daedroth to fight for you for 15 seconds that is extremely potent in both Dungeons and Trials. It deals great single target and Area of Effect (AoE) damage as it swaps between three different attacks, Fiery Claw, Jagged Claw, and Fiery Breath. It stays within melee range at all times and if your Tank can group enemies effectively, the Fiery Breath will make short work of add fights. If you are familiar with Light Attack weaving, the Daedroth will spawn regularly in combat, and when the duration runs out it can be summoned again immediately. The huge downside of this set is that it almost always spawns in front of your Tank during boss encounters, be considerate of your Tanks and have another Monster Set ready to swap to should this become an issue for them.

Burning Spellweave is a great stepping stone if you are looking to replace Law of Julianos and do not yet feel ready for Trials. The set is even viable in end game content. Burning Spellweave is a set that can be broken, meaning it is most commonly equipped on the Front Bar only. Because of this, now is a great time to start farming for a Maelstrom Arena Inferno Staff (Acquired from the final chest in Maelstrom Arena) for your Back Bar. The only downside to the Burning Spellweave set is the duration and cooldown capping the uptime at 67%.

Spell Parasite makes for an excellent 4-piece bonus setup when used with Law of Julianos and Willpower to increase the core stats that you need as a Magicka DPS. While it is not absolutely necessary to wear each set piece of armor in the exact slot, the configuration laid out above was built with an easy upgrade path in mind. Once you have obtained this setup, you should be ready to start hunting for a Monster Set to replace your helmet and shoulder pieces. Grothdarr (Acquired from the final boss in Veteran Vaults of Madness) is an easy to obtain, yet solid option that works very well in both add fights and boss encounters.

Law of Julianos provides even more core stats needed by a Magicka DPS, making it a staple set for beginners.

Willpower is easy to obtain and further increases your core stats as a Magicka DPS. The jewelry can drop in Healthy, Robust, and Arcane. Be sure you purchase and equip the correct trait.

Skills

Several Sorcerer passives found in the Class skill lines provide amazing bonuses. For example, spending skill points in the Exploitation passive from the Dark Magic skill line will provide Minor Prophecy to all group members for up to 20 seconds when you cast any skill from that skill line. Spending skill points in the Expert Summoner passive from the Daedric Summoning skill line will grant up to an additional 8% Max Health while you have a pet from that skill line active. And last but certainly not least, spending skill points in the Expert Mage passive from the Storm Calling skill line will increase your Weapon Damage and Spell Damage by 2% for each Class skill slotted. These are only some of the more notable passives available to Sorcerers exclusively, there are even more.

Front Bar

Elemental Weapon is the strongest spammable available to Magicka DPS. It relies on Light Attack weaving to deal any damage, so if you are just learning, try using Force Pulse instead. Spending skill points in the Spell Orb passive from the Psijic Order skill line will increase your DPS even further while using this skill.

Daedric Prey will increase the damage dealt by your currently active pets significantly, including your Greater Storm Atronach. The skill should only be reapplied after the duration runs out completely, otherwise the skill will reset its timer and will not deal any damage.

Twilight Tormenter will deal damage on its own while summoned, however, when you activate the special ability it deals significantly more damage to enemies above 50% Health. When your enemy is below 50% Health, you can stop using the special ability for the rest of the fight. Must be slotted on both bars to remain active at all times.

Crystal Fragments should be activated only when the special effect occurs. Once triggered, this skill takes immediate priority as it can trigger every time you activate a skill that costs Magicka. Dealing damage with this skill also heals you.

Volatile Familiar will deal damage on its own while summoned, however, when you activate the special ability, it becomes one of the strongest Area of Effect (AoE) skills in the game. Not only does it hit hard, it also stuns on the final pulse. Must be slotted on both bars to remain active at all times.

Ultimate: Greater Storm Atronach is a hard hitting Ultimate with a long duration and a powerful synergy. Enemies hit by the initial impact will be stunned. While it is best used against bosses, it will also make short work of add fights. The synergy granted by the Storm Atronach is the only reliable way to give a group member Major Berserk and is best to leave for another DPS. This Ultimate does not need to be double slotted, however, due to Sorcerer passives, doing so will increase your Spell Damage.

Back Bar

Channeled Acceleration is a very important skill to keep active throughout the entire fight as it provides the Minor Force buff. While the buff lasts for 36 seconds when at max rank, be sure to activate the skill when there is about 2 seconds left as there is a channel time needed to refresh the duration of the buff.

Unstable Wall of Elements is the most important Damage over Time (DoT) skill to keep active in combat. While the skill is active, the enchantment on your Back Bar will continue to trigger, even while on your Front Bar. If a Maelstrom Arena Destruction Staff is equipped, this skill is required to deal the bonus damage.

Lightning Flood pairs well with Unstable Wall of Elements as the durations of both skills are the same. It also provides group members standing near it with a synergy that deals a considerable amount of damage.

Alternative Skills

Bound Aegis

Bound Aegis would be primarily slotted for the 8% increase to Max Magicka, but it also grants you Minor Resolve. When activated, you are able to mitigate an additional 40% damage while blocking. If you are not using Essence of Spell Power potions, slot Inner Light instead. Can be double slotted for consistency in Max Magicka between both bars.

Inner Light

Inner Light is slotted for the 5% increase to Max Magicka. It also grants Major Prophecy if you are not using Essence of Spell Power potions regularly. Spending skill points in the Magicka Controller passive from the Mages Guild skill line will grant an additional 2% Maximum Magicka and Magicka Recovery while any Mages Guild skill is slotted.

Crushing Shock

Crushing Shock is a great alternative to Force Pulse and Elemental Weapon if you would like to provide more utility to your group with a ranged interrupt.

Elemental Rage

Elemental Rage can be slotted in place of Greater Storm Atronach when you require a high burst of AoE damage. It is best to slot on the Back Bar so you still receive the Spell Damage increase on the Front Bar.

Force Pulse

Force Pulse is a great alternative to Elemental Weapon if you prefer more AoE damage. Force Pulse also does not rely on Light Attack weaving to deal damage, so it is more beginner friendly.

Dark Conversion

Dark Conversion can be slotted for more Magicka sustain. Heavy Attacking is slow and could miss your target if they dodge. Slotting Dark Conversion avoids this issue entirely, providing a burst of Health and Magicka upon activation and more Magicka over time. However, the downside to slotting this skill is sacrificing a skill that could increase DPS.

Critical Surge

Critical Surge is an amazing alternative skill to Channeled Acceleration if you decide to use Medusa instead of Mother’s Sorrow. Critical Surge is an easy source of Health sustain and Major Sorcery. Of course this skill remains a flex slot, so if you would prefer more damage and are using Essence of Spell Power potions, Mystic Orb is a great option.

Mystic Orb

Mystic Orb is one of the strongest AoE damage skills in the game but it comes with a high Magicka cost. Best used in add fights or against large bosses. The synergy provided by the orb deals amazing burst damage and restores some resources back to the group member that activated it.

Hardened Ward

Hardened Ward grants both you and your active pets a damage shield while active, however, your damage shield is 10% stronger.

Barbed Trap

Barbed Trap is a great alternative to Channeled Acceleration, however, it can only be used while in close range. It does not deal much damage but it also provides the Minor Force buff. While the buff lasts for 18 seconds when at max rank, be sure to reset the trap when there is about 2 seconds left as there is a short time needed to arm the trap once it is placed.

Rotation

Below you will find how to begin a Dynamic rotation. This means you activate your skills accordingly, depending on the situation and duration of your skills. It yields the best possible DPS and resource management but is harder to master. Expect to see a Static rotation at some point in the future.
LA = Light Attack

Pre-buff with Channeled Acceleration or Critical Surge (Depending on what armor you are using), Twilight Tormentor, and Volatile Familiar.

Begin combat on the Front Bar:
LA > Daedric Prey > Bar Swap >
LA > Lightning Flood > LA > Unstable Wall of Fire > Bar Swap >
LAElemental Weapon until the Crystal Fragments special effect activates or DoT/AoE/buff skills need to be reapplied.

Notes

Crystal Fragments should always be the top priority when the special effect activates. Never channel this ability.

Activate Volatile Familiar and Twilight Tormentor on the front bar only. This reduced time spent on your back bar and reduces the cost if you are using (Perfected) False God’s Devotion.

Be considerate of your group, be sure to summon your Greater Storm Atronach slightly away from the group. This allows you and your group to have a full view of the battlefield. The atronach is huge and could block the vision of the Tank or cause other DPS to have trouble Light Attacking.

If parsing, ensure that your Greater Storm Atronach or Elemental Rage is ready and cast it before Unstable Blockade when beginning.
