Magicka Sorcerer

Build Introduction:
Welcome to the Magicka Sorcerer build Dark Tempest for The Elder Scrolls Online! Magicka Sorcerers are extremely versatile, having many different play styles while also being one of the most simple Classes to learn for beginners, however, this does not mean they are any less viable in end game content. Sorcerers have amazing Health and Magicka sustain as well as the capability to gain higher than average Weapon Damage and Spell Damage due to their unique set of skills and passives. They are also the only available source of group wide Minor Prophecy, making them even more valuable to groups with Magicka based Damage Dealers (DPS). The Dark Tempest build will cover all of this and more, including recommended armor sets, skills, and many alternatives to meet a variety of needs. Be sure to read the guide in its entirety and bookmark the page as the build will be updated with each new patch.

Below you will find plenty of information to begin fulfilling the DPS role as a Magicka Sorcerer. You will learn to successfully utilize the benefits that they can provide to both themselves and to their group through their unique set of skill and passives. Being a DPS in ESO is very different from other MMORPGs. There are no set cooldowns on your skills, so you must learn a rotation. This will include a main damage skill (spammable), Light Attacks, Damage over Time skills, Area of Effect skills, and buffs. Luckily you can follow along at your own pace. The path to becoming a great Sorcerer DPS is long, and it starts here.

Race

High Elf

Reduces damage taken by 5% while you are using an ability with a cast or channel time. Restores 645 Magicka or Stamina, based of whichever is lowest, after activating a Class ability. This effect can occur once every 6 seconds.

Increases Max Magicka by 2000.

Increases your Spell Damage by 258.

Dark Elf

Increase Max Magicka and Max Stamina by 1875.

Increases your Flame Resistance by 2310, gain immunity to the Burning status effect.

Increases your Weapon and Spell Damage by 258.

Breton

Increase Max Magicka by 2000

Increases Spell Resistance by 2310 and 100 Magicka Recovery. The Spell Resistance granted by the effect will be doubled if you are afflicted with Burning, Chilled, or Concussed.

Reduces the Magicka cost of your abilities by 7%

High Elves are highly recommended for Magicka Sorcerers. Like most other Classes, you will fail to utilize the damage reduction portion of the first passive you receive due to rarely using abilities with cast or channel times. You will be able to make use of the sustain portion of that passive as Sorcerers benefit greatly from slotting more Class skills. High Elves also grant the highest Max Magicka and Spell Damage increases you can receive from Racial Passives.

Dark Elves are another competitive Race. They offer great increases to your Maximum Magicka and Stamina. They still provide the highest available Spell Damage increase from Racial Passives. The extra Stamina, Flame Resistances, and Burning Status Effect immunity bonuses allow you stay alive more reliably.

Bretons may lose out on the extra damage provided by other Races. They provide much cheaper Magicka skills, extra Magicka Recovery, and a great boost to their Max Magicka. The flat bonus to your Spell Resistance is very noticeable and even more so when you have a Status Effect placed on you.

Invest all available points into Magicka. Your Max Magicka will increase how much damage your skills do in combat. This can be seen on any skill tooltip in the game. If you require more Health, altering the enchantments on your armor is much easier. The goal for DPS is to have about 16,500 Max Health with a food buff active.

While at first the bonus you receive from Attribute Points may not seem like much, it is important to note that the value per point will increase until you reach CP300.

Blue CP150-160 Food

Blue CP150-160 Food is a crafted food in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This food is best if you already have great sustain, as it will boost your Health and Magicka stats higher than Epic quality foods will. If you find yourself with low sustain or needing to Heavy Attack often, try using Clockwork Citrus Filet or Witchmother’s Potent Brew instead.

Clockwork Citrus Filet

Clockwork Citrus Filet is a crafted food in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This food offers the best boosts to Max Health, Max Magicka, and Magicka Recovery. This food is not cheap, if Gold is an issue, use Witchmother’s Potent Brew instead. This is a min/max food and does not offer much more than Witchmother’s Potent Brew.

Witchmother's Potent Brew

Witchmother’s Potent Brew is a crafted drink in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This food offers great boosts to Max Health, Max Magicka, and Magicka Recovery. This food is a step down from Clockwork Citrus Filet, however, it is much more affordable and you will not notice much of a difference. If Gold is not an issue, use Clockwork Citrus Filet instead.

Essence of Magicka

Essence of Magicka potions are generic potions found in ESO as they can drop from a variety of sources. You will often come across plenty of these during a regular play session. Use these if you require a quick boost to your Magicka and don’t have other crafted options. Using these potions without Critical Surge active will result in a DPS decrease.

Essence of Spell Power

Essence of Spell Power potions are crafted potions in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. I highly suggest using only these potions in all content as they provide sustain and necessary buffs. If Gold is an issue, try using the generic Essence of Magicka instead.

Domihaus will summon a ring of fire as long as you are dealing some form of magical damage. The set itself will not always deal much damage as the ring is very thin, but the increase to your Spell Damage is what really matters. Domihaus also provides you with extra Stamina and Magicka, allowing you to possibly block or dodge roll one more time than you may without it.

Medusa increases your Spell Critical and grants you Minor Force at all times. This allows you to slot another buff or damage skill instead of Channeled Acceleration. Wearing the set in the configuration above will result in higher physical and spell resistances. This is because chest and leg pieces already have higher base resistance stats. You must use a 5 Light, 0 Medium, and 2 Heavy (5L/0M/2H) setup which will decrease Max Stamina and Max Magicka granted from the Undaunted Mettle passive by 2% and reduce your Stamina Recovery by 2%. However, these decreases are small, and you will not notice them. Because Medusa is a Heavy Armor set, the jewelry will always drop with the Healthy trait. This means you must transmute it to the trait you desire yourself. Bloodthirsty is the most commonly used high damage trait, but if you prefer consistency through the entire fight over higher damage during execute phase, Infused is another great option.

(Perfected) False God’s Devotion grants you Spell Critical, Minor Slayer at all times, and Magicka sustain two different ways. The cost reduction will be most helpful in boss encounters while the Magicka restore from killing enemies will be most helpful in add fights. The difference between the Perfected and non-Perfected version is small and will not make or break your build. With that said, if you are able to obtain the Perfected version of the set, do so.

(Perfected) Crushing Wall significantly increases your Light Attack damage to enemies standing in your Unstable Wall of Elements, meaning your LA weaving will be even more rewarding. The effect works even while on your Front Bar, however, Unstable Wall of Elements must be active. You can easily do without the Perfected version of this set as it only adds Spell Penetration to the skills on your Back Bar. As a Magicka DPS, you can already reach these requirements with little effort.

Maw of the Infernal summons a Daedroth to fight for you for 15 seconds that is extremely potent in both Dungeons and Trials. It deals great single target and AoE damage as it swaps between three different attacks, Fiery Claw, Jagged Claw, and Fiery Breath. It stays within melee range at all times and if your Tank can group enemies effectively, the Fiery Breath will make short work of add fights. If you are familiar with Light Attack weaving, the Daedroth will spawn regularly in combat, and when the duration runs out it can be summoned again immediately. The huge downside of this set is that it almost always spawns in front of your Tank during boss encounters, be considerate of your Tanks and have another Monster Set ready to swap to should this become an issue for them.

Law of Julianos is a simple set that provides core stats needed by a Magicka DPS, making it a staple set. Now is a great time to start farming for a Maelstrom Arena Inferno Staff (Acquired from the final chest in Maelstrom Arena) for your Back Bar. While it is not recommended to break a set such as Law of Julianos, doing so for the bonus from the Maelstrom Arena Inferno Staff is an exception.

Spell Parasite makes for an excellent 4-piece bonus setup when used with Law of Julianos and Willpower to increase the core stats that you need as a Magicka DPS. While it is not absolutely necessary to wear each set piece of armor in the exact slot, the configuration laid out above was built with an easy upgrade path in mind. Once you have obtained this setup, you should be ready to start hunting for a Monster Set to replace your helmet and shoulder pieces. Grothdarr (Acquired from the final boss in Veteran Vaults of Madness) is an easy to obtain, yet solid option that works very well in both add fights and boss encounters.

Law of Julianos provides even more core stats needed by a Magicka DPS, making it a staple set for beginners.

Willpower is easy to obtain and further increases your core stats as a Magicka DPS. The jewelry can drop in Healthy, Robust, and Arcane. Be sure you purchase and/or equip the correct trait.

Skills

Several Sorcerer passives found in the Class skill lines provide amazing bonuses. For example, spending skill points in the Exploitation passive from the Dark Magic skill line will provide Minor Prophecy to all group members for up to 20 seconds when you cast any skill from that skill line. Spending skill points in the Expert Summoner passive from the Daedric Summoning skill line will grant up to an additional 8% Max Health while you have a pet from that skill line active. And last to be featured but certainly not least, spending skill points in the Expert Mage passive from the Storm Calling skill line will increase your Weapon Damage and Spell Damage by 2% for each Class skill slotted. These are only some of the more notable passives available to Sorcerers exclusively, there are even more.

Front Bar

Elemental Weapon is the strongest spammable available to Magicka DPS. It relies on Light Attack weaving to deal any damage, so if you are just learning, try using Force Pulse instead. Spending skill points in the Spell Orb passive from the Psijic Order skill line will increase your DPS even further while using this skill.

Daedric Prey will increase the damage dealt by your currently active pets significantly, including your Greater Storm Atronach. The skill should only be reapplied after the duration runs out completely, otherwise the skill will reset its timer and will not deal any damage.

Bound Aegis is primarily slotted for the 8% increase to Max Magicka, but it also grants your Minor Resolve. When activated, you are able to mitigate an additional 40% damage while blocking. If you are not using Essence of Spell Power potions, slot Inner Light instead. Double slotted for Max Magicka consistency between both bars. If you require a damage shield or any other skill, you may replace Bound Aegis on your Back Bar.

Crystal Fragments should be activated only when the special effect occurs. Once triggered, this skill takes immediate priority as it can trigger every time you activate a skill that costs Magicka. Dealing damage with this skill also heals you.

Twilight Tormenter will deal damage on its own while summoned, however, when you activate the special ability it deals significantly more damage to enemies above 50% Health. When your enemy is below 50% Health, you can stop using the special ability for the rest of the fight. Must be slotted on both bars to remain active at all times.

Ultimate: Greater Storm Atronach is a hard hitting Ultimate with a long duration and a powerful synergy. Enemies hit by the initial impact will be stunned. While it is best used against bosses, it will also make short work of add fights. The synergy granted by the Storm Atronach is the only reliable way to give a group member Major Berserk and is best to leave for another DPS. This Ultimate does not need to be double slotted, however, due to Sorcerer passives, doing so will increase your Spell Damage.

Back Bar

Critical Surge is your primary source of Health sustain, and if you are using the generic Essence of Magicka potions, your source of Major Sorcery. This is a flex slot, if you would prefer another source of damage and are using Essence of Spell Power potions, you can slot Mystic Orb instead.

Unstable Wall of Elements is the most important Damage over Time (DoT) skill to keep active in combat. While the skill is active, the enchantment on your Back Bar will continue to trigger, even while on your Front Bar. If a Maelstrom Arena Destruction Staff is equipped, this skill is required to deal the bonus damage.

Lightning Flood pairs well with Unstable Wall of Elements as the durations of both skills are the same. It also provides group members standing near it with a synergy that deals a considerable amount of damage.

Alternative Skills

Volatile Familiar

Volatile Familiar will deal damage on its own while summoned, however, when you activate the special ability, it becomes one of the strongest Area of Effect (AoE) skills in the game. Not only does it hit hard, it also stuns on the final pulse. Must be slotted on both bars to remain active at all times.

Dark Conversion

Dark Conversion can be slotted for more Magicka sustain. Heavy Attacking is slow and could miss your target if they dodge. Slotting Dark Conversion avoids this issue entirely, providing a burst of Health and Magicka upon activation and more Magicka over time. However, the downside to slotting this skill is sacrificing a skill that could increase DPS.

Mystic Orb

Mystic Orb is one of the strongest AoE damage skills in the game but it comes with a high Magicka cost. Best used in add fights or against large bosses. The synergy provided by the orb deals amazing burst damage and restores some resources back to the group member that activated it.

Crushing Shock

Crushing Shock is a great alternative to Force Pulse and Elemental Weapon if you would like to provide more utility to your group with a ranged interrupt.

Elemental Rage

Elemental Rage can be slotted in place of Greater Storm Atronach when you require a high burst of AoE damage. It is best to slot on the Back Bar so you still receive the Spell Damage increase on the Front Bar.

Empowered Ward

Empowered Ward grants you and your active pets a damage shield while also providing the group with Minor Intellect for the duration.

Inner Light

Inner Light is slotted for the 5% increase to Max Magicka. It also grants Major Prophecy if you are not using potions. Spending skill points in the Magicka Controller passive from the Mages Guild skill line will grant an additional 2% Max Magicka and Magicka Recovery while any Mages Guild skill is slotted.

Channeled Acceleration

Channeled Acceleration should be slotted and kept active at all times if you are not using the Medusa set as your source of Minor Force. The buff lasts for 36 seconds but should be activated again when there is about 2 seconds left for the best possible uptime.

Champion Points

Below is a general overview for CP810, CP600, and CP300.

The Mage Constellation

The current allocation of Mage Champion Points is optimized for strong Light Attacks and direct damage. You have a mix of both direct damage and AoE skills, benefiting from Master-at-Arms and Thaumaturge respectively. Magicka DPS are no longer required to invest points in Spell Erosion as they can easily achieve the goal for character penetration (5850) with an optimized group. If your Tank is not using Alkosh, you may still need to invest some points here.

The Thief Constellation

The current allocation of Thief Champion Points is optimized for high sustain and good survivability. Heavy Attacks will restore a considerable portion of your Magicka back if necessary and you do not need to have Dark Conversion slotted. Points spent into Warlord, Sprinter, Tumbling, and Shadow Ward ensures you can be agile on the battlefield when you need to be. If you find that you need to break free more often than blocking or roll dodging, you can always shift the points around yourself.

Rotation

Below you will find a Dynamic rotation. This means you activate your skills accordingly, depending on the situation and duration of your skills. It yields the best possible DPS and resource management but is harder to master. Expect to see a Static rotation at some point in the future.
LA = Light Attack

Pre-buff with Critical Surge and Channeled Acceleration (If using).

Begin combat on the Back Bar:
LA > Twilight Tormenter > LA > Lightning Flood > LA > Unstable Blockade > Bar Swap >
LADaedric Prey > LA > Elemental Weapon until the Crystal Fragments special effect activates or DoT/AoE skills need to be reapplied.

Notes

Crystal Fragments should always be top priority when the special effect activates. Never channel this ability.

While in a group, be sure to summon your Greater Storm Atronach slightly away from the group. This is done to allow you and your group to have full view of the battlefield. The atronach is huge and could block the vision of the Tank.

If parsing, ensure that your Greater Storm Atronach or Elemental Rage is ready and cast it before Unstable Blockade when beginning.
