Templar Healer

Writer: xGamx
Designer: xGamx
Role: Healer
Patch: Flames of Ambition

Build Introduction:
Welcome to the Templar Healer build Oracle for The Elder Scrolls Online! While any Class has the ability to heal, Templars are generally a top pick amongst new players. This is because Templars have a unique skill line that focuses on healing called Restoring Light, offering strong burst heals, single target and Area of Effect (AoE) Heal over Time skills (HoTs), and cleanses. Templars are the only available source of group-wide Minor Sorcery, making them even more valuable in groups with Magicka-based Damage Dealers (DPS). The Oracle build will cover all of this and more, including recommended armor sets, skills, and alternatives to meet a variety of needs. Be sure to read the guide in its entirety and bookmark the page as the build will be updated with each new patch.

Below you will find plenty of information to begin fulfilling the Healer role as a Templar. You will learn to successfully utilize the benefits that they can provide to both themselves and their group through their unique set of skills and passives. Playing a Healer in ESO is very different from most other MMORPGs. It is a lot more fast-paced as you must maintain your own resources, keep your group alive and buffed, while also applying debuffs to your enemies. Luckily for you, Templars are one of the most beginner-friendly Classes to learn how to fulfill the Healer role effectively while still being a top-tier choice in late-game content.

Race

High Elf

When you activate an ability, you restore 625 Magicka or Stamina, based on whichever is lowest. This effect can occur once every 6 seconds. When you are using an ability with a channel or cast time, you take 5% less damage.

Increases your Maximum Magicka by 2000.

Increases your Weapon Damage and Spell Damage by 258.

Argonian

Increases your healing done by 6%.

Increases your Maximum Health by 1000 and Poison and Disease Resistance by 2310.

Increases your Maximum Magicka and Maximum Stamina by 1000. When you drink a potion, you restore Health, Magicka, and Stamina.

Breton

Increases your Maximum Magicka by 2000.

Increases your Spell Resistance by 2310. This effect is doubled if you are afflicted with Burning, Chilled, or Concussed. Increases your Magicka Recovery by 130.

Reduces the Magicka cost of your abilities by 7%.

High Elves are highly recommended for Templar Healers. They benefit from high stat increases to Maximum Magicka and Spell Damage, two very important stats for Magicka-based Healers in ESO. The method of sustain provided by High Elves is unique, and Templar Healers can make use of it rather easily as you will have a few Class skills slotted at all times. Like most other Classes Templar Healers fail to utilize the damage reduction due to never casting abilities with channel or cast times.

Argonians provide increases to your Maximum Health, Maximum Magicka, Maximum Stamina, and your healing done, all of these stats are important to a Healer. The added healing done almost makes up for the Powered trait on your Restoration Staff, allowing you to more comfortably use a different trait. The method of sustain provided by Argonians is unique as it is tied to the usage of potions. While you may not have great consistent recovery, the burstiness of this method is very effective.

Bretons provide increases to your Maximum Magicka, Magicka Recovery, and Spell Resistances. They also reduce the cost of Magicka abilities, this includes the Magicka cost while blocking with an Ice Staff. Bretons are best used if you struggle with Magicka sustain or have trouble staying alive as the Spell Resistance increase is very noticeable, especially when doubled.

Invest all available points into Magicka. Your Maximum Magicka will increase the amount of healing your skills do in combat. If you feel that you need more Health, altering the enchantments on your armor or using a different food is much easier to change at any time. Healers are expected to have at least 20,000 Maximum Health with a food buff active for late-game content.

Illustrious Healing is your main HoT skill. Be sure that you have this on the group at all times, especially if you are using Spell Power Cure.

Combat Prayer grants Minor Berserk and Minor Resolve to group members standing in front of you, incentivizing proper group stacking. Using this skill also provides those members with a strong burst heal.

Purifying Light is typically used on targets that pose the highest threat so they die faster. Spending skill points in the Prism and Illuminate passives from the Dawn’s Wrath skill line will grant you 3 Ultimate every 6 seconds you activate this skill while also providing the group with Minor Sorcery.

Luminous Shards provides a synergy that restores both Maximum Magicka and Maximum Stamina to any member who activates it. Be sure that your Tank has a good supply of these as they will need both resources more often than other roles, especially in late-game content.

Radiating Regeneration targets a maximum of three players, granting them an amazing HoT effect. While it is very effective in Dungeons, it can also be used in Trials to provide a strong burst heal to any players that need to be away from the group for whatever reason.

Ultimate: Reviving Barrier should only be used instead of Aggressive Horn when the group is struggling to stay alive or during phases that deal high damage to group members. Spending skill points in the Magicka Aid passive from the Support skill line will grant you increased Magicka Recovery for each Support skill you have slotted.

Back Bar

Energy Orb rapidly heals the group as it travels and provides a synergy that restores the dominant resource to any member who activates it. Even though this skill can be stressful on your Magicka, try to keep it activate as much as possible.

Elemental Blockade is used to trigger the enchantment on your back bar staff, even while on the front bar. It will also help apply the corresponding status effect of each staff.

Elemental Drain applies Major Breach and Minor Magickasteal to the enemy, this will help your group deal more damage while also increasing Magicka sustain.

Extended Ritual is a long-lasting HoT skill that provides a synergy to group members inside the area. The synergy provides a burst of Health and cleanses them of any currently applied negative effects. Spending skill points in the Sacred Ground passive from the Restoring Light skill line will grant you Minor Mending while standing in the area.

Channeled Focus grants you Major Resolve and extra Magicka sustain while active. The resistance buff is increased by an additional 50% if you are standing inside the rune. Spending skill points in the Sacred Ground passive from the Restoring Light skill line will grant you Minor Mending while standing in the area.

Ultimate: Aggressive Horn is your main Ultimate. It provides all group members with Major Force and a 10% increase to Maximum Stamina and Maximum Magicka. Both Tanks and Healers will have this Ultimate slotted. To prevent the possibility of two or more group members using it at the same time, discuss rotation with everyone before engaging.

Alternative Skills

Breath of Life
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Breath of Life is a strong burst heal that should only be used when necessary. Do not rely on this skill. Practice keeping your HoT skills up and only use Breath of Life in content that you find difficult.

Solar Prison
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Solar Prison applies Major Maim in a large area when your group needs damage mitigation. While active, the Ultimate provides a synergy to a group member that stuns enemies in the area.

Efficient Purge
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Efficient Purge removes up to 3 negative effects from you and your group. While this skill is not used often, it is irreplaceable in the content it is needed.

Crushing Shock
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Crushing Shock allows you to provide more utility to your group with a ranged interrupt.

Overflowing Altar
ESO-Hub Skill icon

Overflowing Altar applies Minor Lifesteal to all enemies in the area and provides a synergy, granting a burst heal to any group member who activates it.

Rotation

Healers do not typically follow a rotation except in long boss fights. During add pulls, you generally want to pre-buff and open with Area of Effect skills. Below you will find a general guide to what you should be doing in Dungeon fights.

Step 1:    Pre-buff the group with Radiating Regeneration and Combat Prayer, then swap to your Ice Staff and use Channeled Focus. If entering a boss fight and Aggressive Horn is up, now is the time to use it. Make sure you and your Tank communicate on who will use it first, as it is best alternated between the two of you.

Step 2:    Apply all back bar buffs and debuffs. This includes Elemental Blockade, Extended Ritual, and Elemental Drain on a few of the more threatening enemies. Now is also a great time to use an Energy Orb for extra healing and group sustain.

Step 3:    Re-apply Combat Prayer if the duration is out, you want to ensure this skill remains up 100% of the time if possible. Use Illustrious Healing on the group for a great AoE HoT effect, Luminous Shards for more DPS and resource management for the team,  and Purifying Light on all threatening enemies so they die faster. On boss fights, make sure Purifying Light remains active at all times.

Step 4:    If add fights are taking longer, make sure Elemental Blockade, Illustrious Healing, Combat Prayer, and Radiating Regeneration remain active while also providing your group with Energy Orbs.

Notes

Breath of Life is not slotted due to most content not requiring a strong burst heal that Combat Prayer can not handle.

Prioritize using Aggressive Horn over Reviving Barrier if you can manage to do so as it increases the damage dealt by everyone in your group. Reviving Barrier should only be used as a last-ditch effort.
