USEFUL MAGICKA DPS SETS

Writer: xGamx
Designer: xGamx
Patch: Flames of Ambition

Welcome to the Useful Magicka DPS Sets guide for The Elder Scrolls Online! There are so many different sets in ESO and sometimes it can seem a little overwhelming. Here, you will find a variety of sets from Crafted to Trial and everything in between. Each category is only listed alphabetically and should not be mistaken for a ranking of effectiveness of each set. Each add fight and boss encounter is different, so it is best to gather as many sets as possible so that you are ready for any situation. More sets will be added with time, so be sure to bookmark this page!

Each listed set will include a link to the set tooltip, where to obtain it, which pieces it drops in, and a short description on the effectiveness. The link for the set card will be color coded displaying how difficult the set is to obtain. Difficulty is a subjective matter. The chart can be found below:

Very Easy | Easy | Challenging | Hard | Very Hard

Crafted Sets

Set: Law of Julianos
Location: Wrothgar or Player Homes.
Weight: Any.
Gear Pieces: All.
Traits Required: 6
Description:
Law of Julianos provides core stats needed by a Magicka DPS, making it a staple set for beginners.

Set: Spell Parasite
Location: Blackreach – Western Skyrim or Player Homes.
Weight: Any.
Gear Pieces: All.
Traits Required: 3
Description:
Spell Parasite makes for an excellent 4-piece bonus setup when paired with sets like Law of Julianos and Willpower to increase the core stats that you need as a Magicka DPS. This set is a great stepping stone before you are ready to farm for a Monster Set.

Overland Sets

Set: Mother’s Sorrow
Location: Deshaan or Guild Stores.
Weight: Light.
Gear Pieces: All.
Description:
Mother’s Sorrow provides slightly more Spell Critical than Medusa and is Light Armor instead of Heavy. However, it does not grant you Minor Force, meaning you are required to slot Channeled Acceleration or Barbed Trap. Both sets are extremely effective, so it is your decision on which to use.

Dungeon Sets

Set: Burning Spellweave
Location: City of Ash I or II
Weight: Light.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Burning Spellweave is a great stepping stone if you are looking to replace Law of Julianos and do not yet feel ready for Trials. The set even has some viability in end game content. Burning Spellweave is a set that can be broken, meaning it is most commonly equipped on the Front Bar only. The only downside to this set is that the uptime is capped at 67% due to the duration and cooldown.

Set: Medusa
Location: Arx Corinium
Weight: Heavy.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Medusa increases your Spell Critical and grants you Minor Force at all times. This allows you to slot another buff or damage skill instead of Channeled Acceleration or Barbed Trap. You must use a 5 Light, 0 Medium, and 2 Heavy (5L/0M/2H) setup which will decrease Max Stamina and Max Magicka granted from the Undaunted Mettle passive by 2% and reduce your Stamina Recovery by 2%. However, these decreases are small, and you will not notice them.

Set: Unleashed Ritualist
Location: The Cauldron
Weight: Light.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Unleashed Ritualist increases your combat pet damage significantly. Not only by a percentage, but combat pets deal even more damage due to the huge increase to your Max Magicka. This set can be broken without much downside, and it is rather easy to keep active. As long as you are dealing any form of damage at least once every 10 seconds on your Front Bar, you have nothing to worry about.

Set: Willpower
Location: Dungeon Finder Rewards or Guild Stores
Weight: None.
Item Pieces: Weapons and Jewelry.
Description:
Willpower is easy to obtain and increases your core stats as a Magicka DPS. The jewelry can drop in Healthy, Robust, and Arcane. Be sure you purchase and/or equip the correct trait.

Set: Z’en’s Redress
Location: Lair of Maarselok
Weight: Light.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Z’en’s Redress should only be used in an organized group setting, as sometimes a Healer would use this set instead. However, it is incredibly easy for a Class such as a Magicka Dragonknight to keep this set up and the entire group will receive the full benefit. While using this set, you should consider yourself a Support DPS. It may look like your DPS is lower, but you are buffing the entire group so much more.

Monster Sets

Set: Domihaus
Location: Head: Veteran Falkreath Hold | Shoulders: Urgalarg Chief-bane’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Domihaus will summon a ring of fire as long as you are dealing some form of magical damage. The set itself will not always deal much damage as the ring is very thin, but the increase to your Spell Damage is what really matters. Domihaus also provides you with extra Stamina and Magicka, allowing you to possibly block or dodge roll one more time than you may without it.

Set: Grothdarr
Location: Head: Veteran Vaults of Madness | Shoulders: Glirion Redbeard’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Grothdarr deals Area of Effect Flame Damage that is centered on you. This is very effective against enemies that move around a lot and your Tank is unable to keep them in one place.

Set: Iceheart
Location: Head: Veteran Direfrost Keep | Shoulders: Glirion Redbeard’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Iceheart is most commonly used in deathless challenges and solo content for the damage shield. This Monster Set does not deal much damage but it does increase your Spell Critical rating slightly.

Set: Ilambris
Location: Head: Veteran Crypt of Hearts I | Shoulders: Glirion Redbeard’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Even though Ilambris has been nerfed and altered several times over the years, it is still a great stepping stone for beginners. This set is the best parsing Monster Set for Magicka Dragonknights using Elf Bane and the Molten Whip or Flame Lash skill as a spammable.

Set: Maw of the Infernal
Location: Head: Veteran Banished Cells II | Shoulders: Maj al-Ragoth’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Maw of the Infernal is extremely potent in both Dungeons and Trials. It deals great single target and Area of Effect damage as it swaps between three different attacks, Fiery Claw, Jagged Claw, and Fiery Breath. It stays within melee range at all times and if your Tank can group enemies effectively, the Fiery Breath will make short work of add fights. If you are familiar with Light Attack weaving, the Daedroth will spawn regularly in combat, and when the duration runs out it can be summoned again immediately. The huge downside of this set is that it almost always spawns in front of your Tank during boss encounters, be considerate of your Tanks and have another Monster Set ready to swap to should this become an issue for them.

Set: Slimecraw
Location: Head: Veteran Wayrest Sewers I | Shoulders: Maj al-Ragoth’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Slimecraw grants Minor Berserk at all times which is great for solo content. However, using this set while in a group with a Healer using Combat Prayer will prove it redundant.

Set: Zaan
Location: Head: Veteran Scalecaller Peak | Shoulders: Urgalarg Chief-bane’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Zaan is currently the best parsing Monster Set for most classes. It does extremely well in boss encounters as it deals single target damage, however, you should have another set ready to use in add fights.

Trial Sets

Set: (Perfected) False God’s Devotion
Location: (Veteran) Sunspire.
Weight: Light.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
(Perfected) False God’s Devotion grants you Spell Critical, Minor Slayer at all times, and Magicka sustain two different ways. The cost reduction will be most helpful in boss encounters while the Magicka restore from killing enemies will be most helpful in add fights. The difference between the Perfected and non-Perfected version is small and will not make or break your build. With that said, if you can obtain the Perfected version of the set, do so.

Set: (Perfect) Mantle of Siroria
Location: (Veteran) Cloudrest.
Weight: Light.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
(Perfect) Mantle of Siroria is in fights where you are tightly stacked and standing still for most of the fight. It is also used for hitting higher parses on a Trial Dummy. You would typically change sets out between add fights and boss encounters. In those cases, you would replace this set with (Perfected) False God’s Devotion. Siroria is a set that can be broken, meaning that you would only on the Front Bar. However, doing so requires you to Light Attack at least once every 5 seconds for the set bonus to remain active. The difference between the Perfect and non-perfect versions is small and will not make or break your build. With that said, if you can obtain the Perfect version of the set, do so.

PvP Sets

Set: Elf Bane
Location: Vlastarus Elite Gear Vendor or Guild Stores.
Weight: Heavy.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Elf Bane increases Flame Damage skill duration by 5 seconds across the board and is the best set to equip on a Magicka Dragonknight as almost every skill slotted by the Class is Flame Damage. The set also increases the duration of some Monster Sets such as Grothdarr, Ilambris, and Domihaus. You must be in combat for the effects of this set to occur.

Mythic Sets

Set: Ring of the Pale Order
Location: Antiquities.
Weight: None.
Item Pieces: Ring.
Description:
Ring of the Pale Order is a very good set for solo content and experienced players in some end-game content. When using this ring, you must rely on yourself to deal enough damage, dodge attacks, and avoid enemy ground Area of Effects to stay alive.

Arena Sets

Set: (Perfected) Maelstrom Staff
Location: (Veteran) Maelstrom Arena.
Weight: None.
Item Pieces: Destruction Staff.
Description:
The (Perfected) Maelstrom Staff significantly increases your Light Attack damage to enemies standing in your Unstable Wall of Elements, meaning your Light Attack weaving will be even more rewarding. The effect works even while on your Front Bar, however, Unstable Wall of Elements must be active. You can easily do without the Perfected version of this set as it only adds Spell Penetration to the skills on your Back Bar. As a Magicka DPS, you can already reach these requirements with little effort.
