USEFUL TANK SETS

Writer: xGamx
Designer: xGamx
Patch: Blackwood – Gates of Oblivion

Welcome to the Useful Tank Sets guide for The Elder Scrolls Online! There are so many different sets in ESO and sometimes it can seem a little overwhelming. Here, you will find a variety of sets from Crafted to Trial and everything in between. Each category is only listed alphabetically and should not be mistaken for a ranking of the effectiveness of each set. When playing a support role such as Tank, it is best to gather as many sets as possible for maximum compatibility with any group.

Each listed set will include a link to the set tooltip, where to obtain it, which pieces it drops in, and a short description of the effectiveness. The link for the set card will be color-coded displaying how difficult the set is to obtain. The difficulty is a subjective matter. The chart can be found below:

Very Easy | Easy | Challenging | Hard | Very Hard

Crafted Sets

Set: Fortified Brass
Location: The Clockwork City or Player Homes.
Weight: Any.
Gear Pieces: All.
Traits Required: 4
Description:
Fortified Brass is a set most commonly used by beginners. However, as you continue to progress as a Tank, you may find that it provides much more armor than you need. Other sets that grant your entire group benefits and not just yourself would be the better option.

Set: Spectre’s Eye
Location: Coldharbour or Player Homes.
Weight: Any.
Gear Pieces: All.
Traits Required: 8
Description:
Spectre’s Eye is perfect for beginner Tanks just starting to learn enemy visual queues. The set grants you Major Evasion for 30 seconds upon activating any skill that costs Magicka, decreasing damage taken from enemy Area of Effect abilities by 20%.

Set: Torug’s Pact
Location: Deshaan, Stormhaven, Grahtwood, or Player Homes.
Weight: Any.
Gear Pieces: All.
Traits Required: 3
Description:
Torug’s Pact is a good replacement for Roar of Alkosh for beginner Tanks. While using a Crushing enchantment on your Destruction Staff, Torug’s Pact will further amplify the effect, getting you closer to Roar of Alkosh levels of resistance shredding.

Overland Sets

Set: Akaviri Dragonguard
Location: Eastmarch or Guild Stores.
Weight: Heavy.
Gear Pieces: All.
Description:
Akaviri Dragonguard is a great option for beginner Tanks that are looking to start replacing their Crafted Sets. The massive reduction in Ultimate cost will help you keep up more group buffs, such as Aggressive Horn, Pestilent Colossus, etc.

Set: Plague Doctor
Location: Deshaan or Guild Stores.
Weight: Heavy.
Gear Pieces: All.
Description:
Plague Doctor will increase your Health significantly but offers no benefit to your group members. Only use it if you feel like you absolutely must do so to survive. Being a Tank is not only about having high Health and blocking, it is about supporting your group with buffs and debuffing your enemies.

Dungeon Sets

Set: Arkasis’s Genius
Location: Stone Garden
Weight: Heavy.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Arkasis’s Genius is the perfect support set for a Tank in Dungeons or an Off Tank in Trials. Every time you drink a potion while in combat, whether it be a random potion that you found on a corpse or a crafted one, you will give yourself and up to 3 group members 44 Ultimate. This will allow everyone to use their Ultimate more frequently. Pair this with three Reduce Potion Cooldown enchantments on your jewelry pieces and you will have a much easier time sustaining as well. Be aware that any more than 15 seconds cut from your potion cooldown will cause your potion to recharge faster than the cooldown on Arkasis’s Genius, meaning that you may lose out on the Ultimate when you drink a potion too quickly. You MUST be in combat before drinking a potion or you and your group will not receive Ultimate.

Set: Bani’s Torment
Location: Icereach
Weight: Heavy.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Bani’s Torment applies Major Maim to the enemy you taunt for 15 seconds, reducing their damage done by 10%. The cooldown is 15 seconds, meaning that you could have a potential uptime of 100% provided you timed your taunts perfectly. You also gain Major Vitality for the duration, increasing your healing received by 16%. This set is perfect for content that is causing you to struggle to stay alive.

Set: Drake’s Rush
Location: Black Drake Villa
Weight: Heavy.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Drake’s Rush is another great support set for a Tank in Dungeons or an Off Tank in Trials. Simply bashing an enemy grants you and up to 3 group members Major Heroism for 12 seconds. The cooldown is only 18 seconds, making it very competitive to Arkasis’s Genius. However, Drake’s Rush does not rely on drinking potions, meaning you do not need to worry about drinking a potion faster than the cooldown.

Set: Ebon Armory
Location: Crypt of Hearts I and II
Weight: Heavy.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Ebon Armory is easily obtained and is great for a beginner Tank looking to replace their Crafted Sets. When wearing 5 pieces of the set, you grant yourself and all group members an additional 1,000 Maximum Health. The added Health will increase survivability for everyone, allowing them to focus more on their own stats, whether it be offensive or healing.

Set: Hircine’s Veneer
Location: Selene’s Web
Weight: Medium.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Hircine’s Veneer is a less commonly used set, but is an option for the Off Tank in a Trial if your group is heavily Stamina based.

Set: The Worm’s Raiment
Location: Vaults of Madness
Weight: Light.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
The Worm’s Raiment is great to use in Trials by an Off Tank if your group is heavily Magicka-based and requires help with sustaining. Since it is a Light Armor set, you should wear it on your Weapons and Jewelry.

Monster Sets

Set: Bloodspawn
Location: Head: Veteran Spindle Clutch II | Shoulders: Maj al-Ragoth’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Bloodspawn increases your own Physical Resistance, Spell Resistance, and Ultimate regeneration. Even though the chance to activate this set is 6%, it is still very viable for a Tank using Saxhleel Champion.

Set: Encratis’s Behemoth
Location: Head: Veteran Black Drake Villa | Shoulders: Urgalarg Chief-bane’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Encratis’s Behemoth will increase group Flame Damage output as well as Flame Damage reduction for the duration. The radius is fairly large and easy to see, promoting good group stacking for you and your group. Some Classes will be able to activate this set much easier than others. If the Class you are using has no source of Flame Damage, try enchanting your front bar weapon with a Flame Damage glyph.

Set: Lady Thorn
Location: Head: Veteran Castle Thorn | Shoulders: Urgalarg Chief-bane’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Lady Thorn summons a blood ball upon activating a skill that costs Health on a cooldown of 10 seconds. The blood ball provides a synergy that you or a group member can activate to apply Major Maim to all enemies within range. However, Major Maim can only be applied to enemies from this source every 20 seconds. Because of this, the main reason to use Lady Thorn is to easily provide yourself with a synergy to activate Roar of Alkosh. Doing so allows you to be more self-sufficient in groups that may not be reliably supplying you with synergies or if you are standing away from the group and do not get many throughout the fight.

Set: Lord Warden
Location: Head: Veteran Imperial City Prison | Shoulders: Urgalarg Chief-bane’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Lord Warden spawns an orb upon taking damage that increases the Physical Resistance and Spell Resistance for you and your group members while standing within the radius of it. Because this bonus is not a named Minor or Major Buff, it will stack with them.

Set: Sentinel of Rkugamz
Location: Head: Veteran Darkshade Caverns I | Shoulders: Maj al-Ragoth’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Sentinel of Rkugamz is a great Monster Set for any Tank fresh out of the gates at CP160. Activating a self-heal will summon a dwemer spider to your location, aiding in your own resource sustain. If you were to use a group heal, it could help heal your group members as well as restore their resources. It is easy to acquire and will help you learn to self-sustain.

Set: Stonekeeper
Location: Head: Veteran Frostvault | Shoulders: Urgalarg Chief-bane’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Stonekeeper offers great self-sustain for no effort. While you should not solely rely on this set for your sustain, it can help immensely in an encounter that requires you to be split off from the rest of the group such as Off tanking the dragons in Veteran Sunspire.

Set: Thurvokun
Location: Head: Veteran Fang Lair | Shoulders: Urgalarg Chief-bane’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Thurvokun is best used in Dungeon content, particularly add fights. The bile you create underneath you applies Minor Maim to all enemies in the Area of Effect (AoE) as well as the Diseased status effect, which in turn has a chance to apply Minor Defile. Tanks that can easily apply Minor Maim already in an AoE will not get much use from this set such as Dragonknights, Necromancers, and Nightblades.

Set: Tremorscale
Location: Head: Veteran Volenfell | Shoulders: Glirion Redbeard’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Tremorscale is best used with a heavily Stamina-based group if you can properly manage the uptime. If neither Tank has Roar of Alkosh or would rather not use it in the Dungeon or Trial in place of other sets, this is a decent substitute.

Set: Vykosa
Location: Head: Veteran Moon Hunter Keep | Shoulders: Urgalarg Chief-bane’s Undaunted Chest
Weight: Any.
Item Pieces: Head and Shoulders.
Description:
Vykosa is useful when you must reduce the Weapon Damage and Spell Damage of an enemy temporarily. Most commonly found being used in Veteran Sunspire against the Fire Breath from the dragon bosses.

Trial Sets

Set: (Perfected) Claw of Yolnahkriin
Location: (Veteran) Sunspire.
Weight: Heavy.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
(Perfected) Claw of Yolnahkriin is a must-have set for any Tank that plans to fulfill the Main Tank role during a Trial. It is the most simple way of providing your entire group with Minor Courage due to only needing to taunt an enemy, and as the Main Tank, you will always have an enemy to taunt. The set also provides you with the Minor Aegis buff. While 5% damage mitigation may not seem like a lot, in the end, it could make all the difference. There are two versions of this set, Perfected and non-Perfected. The bonus gained from the Perfected version is small, granting an additional 1,206 Maximum Health. While this increase is certainly a benefit, do not feel like you can not Main Tank without it.

Set: Roar of Alkosh
Location: Maw of Lorkhaj.
Weight: Medium.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Roar of Alkosh is a required set for all Tanks to reduce enemy resistances to zero for Stamina-based DPS in Dungeons and Trials. However, if you are not receiving synergies from your group, it is completely useless. To avoid this, you could combine it with Lady Thorn. Combining these two sets allows you to easily provide yourself with a synergy every 10 seconds. Keep in mind that the shockwave only hits enemies in front of you, so be sure to aim it properly. The lower you get the resistance of your enemies, the more DPS your group will do.

Set: (Perfected) Saxhleel Champion
Location: (Veteran) Rockgrove.
Weight: Heavy.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
(Perfected) Saxhleel Champion grants Major Force to yourself and up to 11 other group members for 1 second per 15 Ultimate spent, increasing Critical Damage done by 20%. Using this set allows you to use a wider variety of Ultimates as a Tank or also apply Major Force along with Major Vulnerability when using Pestilent Colossus or Glacial Colossus. The set also provides you with the Minor Aegis buff. While 5% damage mitigation may not seem like a lot, in the end, it could make all the difference. There are two versions of this set, Perfected and non-Perfected. The bonus gained from the Perfected version is small, granting an additional 1,096 Maximum Stamina. While this increase is certainly a benefit, do not feel like you can not Main Tank without it.

Set: (Perfected) Vrol’s Command
Location: (Veteran) Kyne’s Aegis.
Weight: Heavy.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
(Perfected) Vrol’s Command applies group-wide Major Aegis by simply performing a Heavy Attack for up to 12 seconds. It is a great set to have available in more difficult content. The set also provides you with the Minor Aegis buff. While 5% damage mitigation may not seem like a lot, in the end, it could make all the difference. There are two versions of this set, Perfected and non-Perfected. The bonus gained from the Perfected version is small, only granting an additional 4% healing taken. While this increase is certainly a benefit, do not feel like you can not Main Tank without it.

PvP Sets

Set: Powerful Assault
Location: Imperial City Sewers or Guild Stores.
Weight: Medium.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Powerful Assault offers a considerable increase to group Weapon Damage and Spell Damage that stacks well with other sets such as Spell Power Cure, which is often used by Healers. This is because it is a standalone buff whereas SPC is a named buff called Major Courage, meaning that other sets that provide Major Courage will not work. Any skill from the Assault skill line will activate the effect provided by this set, but there are a few that stand out above the rest for various reasons. Be aware that some Healers could also use this set, so be sure to communicate with your group.

Set: Battalion Defender
Location: Rewards for the Worthy or Guild Stores.
Weight: Heavy.
Item Pieces: All.
Description:
Battalion Defender is a great set to use while first learning how to Tank. However, you should look for other options as soon as you can. Being a Tank is more than having high Health and keeping yourself alive, you must be able to support your group with damage buffs as well. You can also use this set in Dungeons while Iron Man tanking with an organized group if you require more active healing.

Mythic Sets

Set: Bloodlord’s Embrace
Location: Antiquities.
Weight: Heavy.
Item Pieces: Chest.
Description:
Bloodlord’s Embrace is a very situational set that could be used when you require much more Magicka sustain and can not risk the shortcomings of Balance. It also works well when you are split off from the group and need to largely rely on yourself. Much like Stonekeeper, you should not solely rely on this for your Magicka sustain. One example of where this set is commonly used is the boss encounters in Veteran Sunspire.

Arena Sets

Set: (Perfected) Dragonstar Arena One Hand and Shield
Location: (Veteran) Dragonstar Arena.
Weight: None.
Item Pieces: One Hand and Shield.
Description:
(Perfected) Dragonstar Arena One Hand and Shield is best paired with a set that can be slotted on the back bar with no major disadvantages such as Powerful Assault or Saxhleel Champion. It requires you to slot a variant of Puncture for the effect to trigger. Because that skill is your main taunt on most Tank builds, keeping this set active is rather easy. There are two versions of this set, Perfected and non-Perfected. The bonus gained from the Perfected version is small, only granting an additional 3% healing taken. While this increase is certainly a benefit, do not feel like you can not Tank without it.

Set: (Perfected) Vateshran Hollows One Hand and Shield
Location: (Veteran) Vateshran Hollows.
Weight: None.
Item Pieces: One Hand and Shield.
Description:
(Perfected) Vateshran Hollows One Hand and Shield works very well in Dungeons and Trials with many adds to pull in. The set pairs very well with Powerful Assault since you do not need to have it double-slotted. It requires you to slot a variant of Power Bash for the effect to trigger. You could slot this skill in place of the other skill you would use for pulling in enemies. Be sure to activate it early in combat because the effect will not work if the enemies are already CC locked. There are two versions of this set, Perfected and non-Perfected. The Perfected version grants an additional 965 Maximum Health. While this increase is certainly a good benefit, staggering your Maximum Health between your front bar and back bar is not recommended.

Set: (Perfected) Vateshran Hollows Restoration Staff
Location: (Veteran) Vateshran Hollows.
Weight: None.
Item Pieces: Restoration Staff.
Description:
(Perfected) Vateshran Hollows Restoration Staff can help immensely with self-sustain in difficult content. To use this set, you will forfeit Elemental Blockade on the back bar. It requires you to slot a variant of Force Siphon for the effect to trigger. There are two versions of this set, Perfected and non-Perfected. The Perfected version grants an additional 877 Maximum Magicka. While this increase is certainly a benefit, do not feel like you can not use the set without it.
